O MTV Video Music Awards 2020 (VMA) ocorreu na noite do último domingo, 30 de agosto, em Nova York. Sendo a primeira grande premiação ao vivo desde o início da pandemia da Covid-19, o VMA teve algumas de suas apresentações musicais gravadas e diversos palcos espalhados pela cidade, além de um em Los Angeles.

Lady Gaga e The Weeknd se consagraram como os destaques da premiação. A cantora recebeu quatro prêmios, sendo eles: “Artista do Ano”, “Música do Ano”, “Melhor colaboração” e “Melhor fotografia”, todos frutos da canção “Rain on Me”, feita em colaboração com Ariana Grande e lançada no álbum “Chromatica”. Além disso, Gaga foi a homenageada do prêmio TRICON Award.
“Eu nunca imaginei que poderia ganhar um prêmio como esse, que me honrasse por tudo que sou. Eu espero que as pessoas que estão em casa, que também têm sonhos, saibam que vocês também podem fazer isso. Eu sei que um novo tempo está surgindo e sei que a cultura pop vai inspirar todos vocês. A arte vai empoderar todos vocês!”, disse Lady Gaga ao receber o prêmio.
Já The Weeknd, que abriu o VMA com uma apresentação explosiva — literalmente — foi o ganhador da categoria “Clipe do Ano” com o videoclipe de “Blinding Lights”, considerada a categoria mais importante da noite. Desde 2013, o cantor acumula 19 indicações ao VMA mas até então nunca tinha vencido um prêmio.
